“While many of the hackers want to inform the public about Russia’s role in areas including propaganda and energy production, Best said a secondary motivation post-invasion is “the symbolic ‘pantsing’” of Putin and some of the oligarchs.”

Washington Post, Hacking Russia was off-limits. The Ukraine war made it a free-for-all.

Introduction

This Sunday Morning article grabbed my attention, and the line quoted above about "pantsing" Putin actually got a laugh. But I did a news search on the topic of western hacking of Russia, and, as the article linked above covers, this is a big deal.

It might be right up there with sanctions, in the long term.

What we are seeing here is how much the Russian system has been run as a criminal cartel dedicated to sucking cash out of the country at every level, including computer security. This has been done with the support of the most senior political and security leadership.

The result has been seen in the condition of the military and its equipment. Now we are finding out that their entire tech infrastructure is a mess and hackers worldwide are getting in and exposing all kinds of stuff.
