Unfortunately, while I respect your determination to buy at local bookstores, there are very few in my city (Rochester, NY) and to find a non-best seller title Amazon is the only option. We have Barnes and Noble but they are barely a bookstore any more, with limited selection and most floor space devoted to non-book items. But you also neglect to mention another big problem: authors who are so desperate to get their work published that they devalue it to zero, take onetime payments without royalties, sell their rights, and make other decisions that have signaled to the business that writers are commodities. I don’t see this changing…
