Texas (and Mississippi) Politicians Don’t Give a Crap About Their Citizens
Hey, let’s open everything up because only 2000 Americans are dying every day.
We are witnessing actions which are indicators of a move towards authoritarianism. Complete disregard for the safety of fellow citizens. Denial of any responsibility. Promotion of patently untrue theories. Encouragement of domestic terrorist actions. Meanwhile in Texas, hundreds of thousands of people have not had water for weeks.
There are literally dozens more examples of this collective insanity by Republican politicians. My theory is that the last year was so crazy that we have become deadened to this craziness and the GOP saw an opening to start blatantly lying to the American public, a large segment of which turn out to be malleable sheep.
Now, with this complete opening of one of the most populous states, in the middle of a pandemic that is nowhere near its end, they have taken an action that will result in thousands of unnecessary deaths. My question is why? What do they gain from this beyond pandering to a bunch of morons, morons who don’t even have a majority?
I realize as I write this that I am still coming from the POV that assumes that logic is still a thing. I never imagined the impact of a former President who is a sociopathic narcissist. He apparently made it ok to not give a shit about voters, the elderly, children, and everyone else just because you are an elected official.
The fact is that being fully open, maskless, and no longer socially distant is going to kill a lot of people unnecessarily. Again, why? What do they gain? A short term boost in popularity? This won’t last. They seem to have an almost religious belief in former POTUS Trump, a guy who won’t be running again because he may be in jail or tied up in court. And a guy who committed serious crimes against his own government.
I cannot imagine how this looks to people outside of the US, but I know my friends abroad basically think America has gone completely bonkers, and it scares them because we have so much power.
The only reassurance is the actual President, Joe Biden, who is working his ass off to make up for all the time lost in 2020. But we can’t get those lives back, many of which were lost because Trump didn’t want to deal with a negative story during an election year. This monumental example of denial likely caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands that did not have to die. Why that is not considered a heinous crime is beyond me.
Now these GOP governors are doubling down on that exact same crime of denial. I personally think that Republicans are actually terrified inside. Terrified of being permanent underdogs politically in a country that is almost majority non-white and moving in that direction quickly. Texans are increasingly non-white and moving toward a Democratic majority, a majority that would mean the Republicans would never again win the White House. That’s the fear pile: non-white majorities, losing previously red states, a population that is younger and better-informed, and the reality of climate change.
Their reaction? Distract, lie, pretend reality is not real, intimidate voters. Support crazy conspiracy theories manufactured to distract minds from the stuff we witness every day. Personally, I think it is likely that these nutty theories are manufactured by jokers in other countries who are now having fun eyeing what kind of kooky stuff some Americans will believe.
Meanwhile, people keep dying.
