Picture a gated retirement community with rules set by a Homeowner’s Association or HOA. An idyllic place to see out one’s final years, undisturbed by the reality of the outside world.

And then a man is elected leader of your HOA and he becomes consumed by writing rules and dictating how you should live your life. You’ve heard the stories, neighbors ganging up on neighbors who fail to adhere to the leader’s decision.

Welcome to the State of Florida under Ron DeSantis.

A lot of Florida is beautiful, a picture postcard of a tropical dream. And a lot of it is just plain weird in its own charming way. You still see strange sideshow attractions along back roads. And tiny enclaves in central Florida where extended families have lived for years.

Shacks and high rise condos.

Geographically, much of Florida is a swamp, which once was fed by a wide flowing river, the Everglades, that did not look like a river from the air. But on the ground, a water world.

The demographics of the state would seem to imply an openness to the Latin world to the south, with people of color making up nearly 50% of the population. Traditionally that population skewed older; northern snowbirds seeking a warm…
