In the novel I’m currently writing the back story is critical but it is teased out. Quite a balancing act but it helps keep the tension there. Why is she in this situation?, etc. I’m not a plotter and don’t write character bios but by the time I get into it I know those characters pretty well. Until they surprise me…(that’s the coolest thing about fiction writing!). Presumably they also surprise the reader.
