I started writing professionally before there were stats. A publisher would publish a book and the only stat I’d get would be the quarterly royalty statement and check. This was the opposite problem- I had little to no feedback from readers. My books were mid-list non-fiction and once they were published, the publishers pretty much ignored them. Today, I’m a marketer and a writer and stats do figure into both but again, only for the insights they offer…good piece.
