Good article. I think you’d find a recent book, Zen Beyond Mindfulness by Jules Shuzen Harris , exceptionally relevant to your situation. Harris is a roshi in Pittsbugh and a therapist. He unites the discipline of Zen meditation and Buddhist models like the skandas with a simple therapeutic tool for applying them to understand our conception of self. It’s not at all dogmatic and the processes are very simple. They seek to expand the value of mindfulness beyond a simple calming tool. And its well-written!

Former software marketer. Former musician. Writer, nine non-fiction books, two novels, Buddhist, train lover. Amateur cook, lover of life most of the time!
