Do ‘real’ writers write self-help? This week Joan Didion passed away at 87. She was what some consider a ‘real’ writer, that is to say, a serious one. And she wrote self-help stuff, along with her lauded essays, novels, and snapshots of California culture.

Winston Churchill, a relatively famous guy, actually made his living as a writer, while saving the world from Hitler. His biographer Wm. Manchester did the math and determined that Churchill was the highest paid writer of the first half of the 20th century. A lot of that writing was popular magazine articles and yes, he wrote a lot of self-help.
