Democrats Need to Start Talking About Real Life

It would be a Republican nightmare

Trump won in 2016 because the Democrat establishment under Clinton had totally lost touch with real life, as experienced by most Americans. It was the single biggest political blunder in my 60+ years on the planet. But we clawed back the Presidency after four disastrous years under Trump and a pandemic he chose to ignore until it was too late.

The reality on the ground right now is that Republican states are not doing well at all. Eight out of ten states experiencing the highest crime rates are red states. Many of these states are among the poorest in the country and corruption is the norm, with money flowing to the richest and away from those who need it most.

Yes, California, has a huge homeless problem but the underlying reality of why is not just about housing problems. I was in Santa Barbara in November 2019 and talked to a city official about the homelessness I was seeing everywhere there. It is one of the wealthiest cities in the country but their problem was growing. The reality behind that growth was startling.

Cold weather cities were shipping their homeless people to Cali with promises of warmth and generosity. Every day the arriving buses added to the problem. As I took a train back to San Francisco I saw dozens of people living in tents hidden in the underbrush along the tracks.

I have a lot of wealthy friends, people who built businesses and worked hard for their money. And a lot of them are Republicans who held their noses and voted for Trump the first time around. They did not like Hilary. Then the Republican controlled Congress gave them an enormous gift in the form of tax cuts, tax cuts most of us did not get.

These stories are the tip of the iceberg. We also had a Republican sanctioned insurrection, open tolerance of racism and anti-semitism, advocation of violence as a legitimate political tool, and denial of the greatest crisis every faced by humanity, climate change.

As I write this Ian is blasting through Florida, causing a level of destruction we cannot even measure yet. The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, wannabe heir to Trump, voted to deny federal flood insurance to NJ and New York when he was in Congress…
