It’s all a bit much; the pandemic, the politics, the divisiveness, and the injustice that all surfaced in 2020 and continues in 2021. But, as crazy as this sounds, all those things were nothing compared to the real crisis going on everywhere with the changing weather. And that crisis is now daily reality.

I live in Western NY, an area of the country less susceptible than most to extremes in heat, cold, drought, fires, and storms. But we still had the hottest June on record, as did the rest of the country. But there were some odd patterns going on here which is why averages need to be taken in context. Our pattern this summer has been to have a series of 90+ humid days, then a few days in the low sixties, and then back up. Not normal.

This rollercoaster ride is not even close to our long term averages. But compared to what is going on out West, we’ll take it. Cities with a low percentage of installed AC hitting temps 15–20 degrees above 100 for days at a time. A drought that is draining the reservoirs that dot the region that make living in desert areas possible. Snowmelt that happens too fast and too little and drains away too fast. So fast that the iconic geysers in Yellowstone may dry up.
